Projects We Love: Tampa International Airport Expansion

Tampa International Airport (TIA) is nearly finished with the first phase of its roughly $2.3 billion expansion. The first phase has included the construction of one of the largest car rental facilities in the country (2.6 million square feet), and a 1.4 mile people mover track, plus renovations to each of the four existing airsides and a major remodel of the main terminal.

The expansion will make travel easier for the over 18 million passengers that pass through Tampa International Airport every year. The project is also positions TIA — currently the nation’s 29th largest — for future growth. Future phases call for a 17 acre development that will include an office building, gas station, hotel and a brand new airside with 16 gates for domestic and international flights. The additions will allow the airport to double its passenger capacity to 34 million annual passengers.

After more than three years of work, we’re taking a moment to celebrate the project, by the numbers:

Breath of fresh air.

The project adds 55,000 square feet to the Main Terminal, including more than 23,000 square feet for new outdoor terraces.

Up, up, up and away.

The project includes the renovation of 24 elevators and the replacement of 1,112 linear feet of escalators.American Football Field

Go long!

The area of the Main Terminal’s third floor currently undergoing renovations is roughly 270,000 square feet, the equivalent of four and a half football fields.

People on the move.

The automated people mover features 7,300 feet of track and travels from the Main Terminal to the rental car center. A typical trip is expected to take about 4.3 minutes. The initial people-mover is designed to carry 2,700 passengers per hour. Eventually, it could handle up to 6,500 per hour.

That’s a lotta tile.

Crews have placed roughly 114,000 square feet of new tile flooring.

Pour it on!

It will take roughly 200,000 cubic yards of concrete – 25,000 truckloads – to build the automated people mover and rental car center.

Pick a car, any car.

Tampa International Airport’s rental car center clocks in at 2.6 million square feet – large enough to hold more than 5,300 vehicles at a time. The center features eight 25,000-gallon fuel tanks and 30 car washing stations. At its peak, it can handle 1,541 rentals and 1,650 returns per hour!

A solid structure.

The facilities will also require 14,000 tons of steel, including 9,000 tons of rebar and 5,000 tons of structural steel.
